    Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Material Handler to join our Specialty Ingredients business at our Freetown, MA location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Operations function. This position will report to Materials Control Manager.


    The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Ability to interpret SDS, and must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by company.
    • Working knowledge of Word and Excel
    • Knowledge of DOT and IATA rules on hazardous materials transportation
    • Working knowledge of SAP system
    • Ability to safely operate a forklift (requires a valid driver’s license).
    • Leads, trains and coordinates personnel engaged in materials handling, shipping/receiving, order filling and inventory control as well as inventory records maintenance.
    • Insures materials shipping, receiving, production order filling and other material movements are performed and documented using proper materials handling equipment and techniques including manual materials handling.
    • Verifies incoming and outgoing materials shipments at the time of physical shipping/receiving. Documents discrepancies between recorded and actual counts on shipping/receiving documentation (including carrier’s copy) and reports to supervision immediately.
    • Controls materials movement records keeping and Inventory Cycle count process. Insures inventory items are used utilizing following the “First In First Out” strategy.
    • Performs shipping / receiving materials movement data entries in SAP.
    • Reconciles materials movement discrepancies in timely manner using e-mail and SAP workflow system.
    • Performs on-hand physical inventory counts as required.
    • Insures housekeeping at all storage locations. Oversees physical storage locations and material handling equipment. Places maintenance, repair and safety related work orders in the company’s system accordingly.


    The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit: 

    • 2-4 years’ experience working in warehousing operations function.
    • Strong SAP skills or inventory management software skills.
    • Understanding of best practices related to warehousing operations.
    • Performs job duties with minimal supervision.
    • Teaches others the fundamentals of Material Handling and SAP processes.
    • Responsible for personnel cross-training and job rotation.
    • May assist in procuring certain materials by placing purchase orders and communicating with Vendors.
