Ashland LLC has an exciting opportunity for a Journeyperson General Mechanic to join our Speciality Chemicals plant located in Hopewell, VA. 




This position is responsible for performing a variety of mechanical work requiring skill and ability in connection with repair, modification, installation and maintenance of Chemical Process Equipment, General preventive maintenance, repair, overhaul and construction, including but not limited to the following: Machining, Welding, Mechanical troubleshooting, Hydraulic Systems, Pipefitting, Drawings, Lubrication, Pumps, Fans, Compressors & Boilers, Sheet metal, Structure Steel, Reactors and Rigging.


Position Responsibilities:  

  • Carries out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines including FDA, EPA and OSHA.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and unobstructed work area
  • General maintenance responsibilities, assignments on a daily basis may include repair to pumps, valves, centrifuges, reactors, conveying systems, screening systems, fans, compressors and any other production equipment required in the facilities production area
  • General maintenance work requiring welding, pipefitting, lubrication, sheet metal work, rigging, machining
  • Flexibility to work overtime as required
  • Efficiently perform tasks while always keeping safety and quality first


Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Journeyperson Mechanic and equivalent documentation demonstrating a minimum of 4 years exerience as a millwright, pipefitter or machinist.
  • Must have working knowledge in the maintenance of machinery & mechanical equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, piping systems, & production equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Some welding experience preferred
  • Possess the ability & initiative to perform safely, efficiently, & accurately to specific duties related to the operation of a chemical process
  • Certificate of completion from industrial maintenance trade school a plus
  • Certification/proven skills in any of the following: Machining, Mechanical troubleshooting, Hydraulic Systems, Reading Blueprints, Compressors & Boilers, Sheet metal, Structure Steel, Reactors and Rigging
  • Proficiency in Windows based computer skills a plus
  • Previous experience with OSHA required Lockout Tag Out, Confined Space, HAZMAT, PPE Requirements
  • Prior experience with explosion prevention systems (e.g. FIKE)
  • Chemical manufacturing in food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic fields
  • Experience entering data into computer system (e.g. Maximo)
  • Previous experience in an environment utilizing GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), ISO Certification

 Additional Requirements

  • Ability to pass required Work Key skills tests
  • Willing to periodically wear a pager for emergency maintenance services during off shift coverage

Physical Demands:  

  • Ability to maneuver/lift heavy/bulky items in hot /cold environment
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, climb stairs and ladders
