Ashland LLC has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Lab Technician.

 

**Position is in Pittsburgh, PA.

Description

As a Lab Technician, you will test and inspect products at various stages of the production process and compile and evaluate statistical data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products by performing the following duties:

  • Must follow all Safety Rules, Regulations, Laboratory Procedures, Corporate/Plant Policies, and Laws at all times.
  • Establish an orderly flow of batches being processed, adjusted and shipped to customers by using standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to new methods or problems as they arise.
  • Determine physical and chemical characteristics of batches and make recommendations of additives to meet specifications.
  • Evaluate raw materials and storage tanks to verify that components used in the polyester process meet all requirements.
  • Provide technical support as needed to production operators to maintain a smooth flow of material being processed, adjusted and shipped.
  • Perform chemical and physical analysis on samples using established procedures, to include but not limited to: viscosity, thixotropic index, gel, interval, peak, appearance, color, monomer percent, and barcol development.
  • Make recommendations to production operators as to what additives should be added to batches in order that all physical and chemical properties can be met.
  • Maintain all components of batch records such as process log sheets, charge sheets, face sheets, rework sheets, specification sheets, certificates of analysis, and other paperwork as relevant to the product.
  • Prepare lab scale blends and adjust them to meet the physical attributes needed for large scale production.
  • Assist with the ordering, receiving, and shipping of raw materials and samples.
  • Keep track of laboratory materials and replace as needed. Examples being glassware, paper goods and miscellaneous chemical additives.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to include periodic calibration, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Packaging, labeling, and loading hazardous waste satellite container for shipment.
  • Preparing samples for shipment.
  • Disposal of contaminated refuse material.
  • Recommend formula revisions based on product history.
  • Effectively communicate with other laboratory technicians to maintain the proper flow of information concerning the lab, kettles, and processing batches.
  • Enter finished product and raw material information into SQC system and print COAs to accompany shipments.
  • activities as assigned by the Quality Control Supervisor (Production procedures, MSDSs, Check Samples, filling in for other Lab Techs, etc.)
  • Follow all aspects of Responsible Care and security for the facility

**This job is based on a ladder structure and the job level (salary) will be determined by the quantity and quality of your experience.

 

Shift:   Shift is 12 hours 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off   6AM -6PM   14 day cycle

            Shift changes to 12 hour reverse  6PM-6AM on next 14 days

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • High School diploma
  • Must have a basic understanding and ability to perform simple tasks in Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • College degree in Chemistry, Biology or a Science related field
  • Quality Control lab experience and/or training, especially quality control of coatings
  • Experience in the composites industry
  • Experience with SAP software or other formula and quality management software

ISO quality management

  • Responsible care practices
  • Experience working in an industrial setting, especially those handling hazardous materials
  • Experience reading and understanding hazardous material labeling systems such as, but not limited to, Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) and the NFPA Hazardous Materials Label
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

 Lifting 
Lab supplies (inventory) - 5 to 50 lbs. (1-5 times per week)
Water Baths - 5 to 50lbs. (0-1 time per week)
5 Gallon Buckets - 5 to 50lbs. (0-1 time per week)


Mobility 
Walk throughput lab frequently – (approximately 20x50ft area)
Walk to the upstairs storage area and throughout the production area approximately once per shift. 

Continuous Standing 
Recurrent standing during the shift (8-12 hours)

Climbing 
Up to approximately 30 steps 2% of the 12-hour shift

 

Vision Critical 
Must be able to see extremely small quantities of material when weighing and
small increments on graph paper. Must be able to accurately discern various colors and their changes in reactions. Read instrumentation, charts, hazard information and enter data into a computer.

 

Hearing 
Must be able to hear beepers, buzzers, timers, and chart records and determine from which area the noise is emitting.

 

Work Environment 
97% of the shift is inside 
3% of the shift outside
