Ashland is seeking an Advanced Materials Process Engineer to join our team in Freetown, MA. This position will work with the advanced materials technical team to define the process conditions required to successfully produce products at the Freetown facility. Exciting opportunity to be exposed to many technologies within Ashland.

This includes direct responsibility for the operation of the production facility in the Freetown F4 pilot plant, the successful transfer of production from the existing facility to Freetown, and directing the work of lab and pilot plant technicians to define and optimize operating conditions.


The Advanced Materials Process Engineer has the following responsibilities:

1) Transition the production of Advanced Materials products from Monroe to Freetown and ensuring the process can consistently produce high quality material.

2) Work with the Advanced Materials team to fully define and document the processes being transferred to Freetown.

3) Support the optimization of the current production processes.

4) Maintain ISO and cGMP standards as they relate to production of these materials.

5) Upgrade the Production and Pilot facilities as required by new processes and general business requirements

6) Direct the optimization and troubleshooting of the existing processes.

7) Work with Advanced Materials group to evaluate the potential transfer of PCDA production from Columbus, OH to Freetown MA.

8) Work with Advanced Materials group to fully define and document the processes being run at Fiskeville and Dayville, CT.  

9) Assist in the orderly closer of the Monroe, NY facility including transfer of any usable equipment to Freetown.


Job Functions:

  • Introduce, monitor and troubleshoot the production of Advanced Materials products and processes, including; writing new process packets, overseeing Process Safety Reviews, completing new process start-ups, and start-up production.
  • Hands-on role in the production of the Advanced Materials products in Freetown
  • Supervise the modification/installation, upgrade and start-up of current and future process equipment.
  • Coordinate projects with Advanced Materials, Corporate and local R&D.
  • Process equipment and plant systems troubleshooting, debottlenecking and optimization.
  • Process definition and optimization. Conduct plant trials and issue reports.
  • Support the PSM program.
  • Interdepartmental communications on day-to-day process problem solving
  • Train operators on new processes and new equipment.
  • Aid in quality investigations - FPQ failures and customer complaints.
  • Coordinate with vendors to test new equipment for new or current processes.

**This job is based on a ladder structure and the job level (salary) will be determined by the quantity and quality of your experience.


  • Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering required; Masters degree preferred
  • Two years' experience in batch manufacturing required; Experience in production of multi-step, organic, and synthetic chemicals preferred. Entry level opportunity!
  • Self-starter
  • Technical knowledge in the following areas:
    • PSM Requirements
    • Unit of operations (such as batch reactors, centrifuges, dryers, distillation, and process control instrumentation)
    • Engineering Calculations
    • Organic and/or inorganic chemistry
    • Master batch record writing, PSRs, HAZOPs, IQ/VQs, validations, start-ups, and scale-ups.
  • Ability to travel in the US by car to various facilities.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US
