Ashland has an exciting and challenging opportunity in our Columbus, Ohio plant for a Chemical Process Engineer.

Description

The Process Engineer provides technical support, monitor, optimize, and ensure PSM compliance for existing batch processes in the manufacturing facility.  Evaluate new process technology to determine feasibility for pilot and full scale manufacturing.  Lead and manage all aspects of new process introduction into the manufacturing facility.  Determine necessary equipment modifications to support new processes and/or to improve current processes.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Author and maintain current operating instructions (batch packets) for the plant and ensure that they are kept up-to-date and compliant with all regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the plant, including process and equipment troubleshooting,
    de-bottlenecking, process optimization, and evaluation of raw materials and potential new raw material suppliers.
  • Evaluate and approve proposed equipment and process technology changes and assess impact to affected processes.
  • Lead process and equipment PHA’s and PHA revalidations as required. Maintain PHA revalidation schedule to ensure continued compliance with PSM.
  • Lead and manage Combustible Dust Assessments for the facility as needed to comply with the corporate standard.
  • Manage and maintain records for Process Safety related activities, such as: submitting requests for process safety testing and relief sizing, maintaining Process Safety Information (PSI) for covered processes, maintain current volume requirements for covered processes, participate in Facility Siting activities, etc.
  • Act as Project Leader for new processes (This requires close coordination with all departments at the facility and involves every aspect of the project from raw material procurement, batch sizing/scaling, hazard review, writing operating instructions, etc., all the way through to packaging and shipment of material).
  • Establish emergency shutdown procedures and safe operating limits for the process. Work with the QC department to establish post-cleaning procedures.
  • Determine critical parameters for effective and safe scale-up from the bench to pilot to commercial production.
  • Set production scales to meet customer needs.
  • Act as New Product Introduction (NPI) representative for the plant. This system is used for corporate review and approval of new processes and process changes at the plant.
  • Responsible for maintaining Recipe Management (RM), Bills of Materials (BOM), Master Recipes (MR, and Production Versions (PV) in SAP for facility processes.
  • Manage MOC electronic system for changes to chemicals, process technology/new processes, and equipment.
  • Participate in process safety and quality incident investigations. Provide input/feedback for process and quality deviations.
  • Must be available 24/7 for start-up coverage, processing questions, and troubleshooting

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering is required.

 EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • 5 to 10 years of experience in Process Engineering and manufacturing in a fine chemicals batch operation environment.
  • Strong aptitude and background in process chemistry and unit operations such as batch reaction, extraction, distillation, polymerization, crystallization, filtration, centrifugation, drying, and milling.
  • Must have a strong background in cGMP (FDA protocols, IQ/OQ/PQ, validations, etc.) and PSM (knowledge of requirements, experience in leading PHA/HAZOP/LOPA).
  • Skilled in technical writing and operating instruction development.
  • Must be familiar with analytical methodology.
  • Must be familiar with basic cost accounting principles.
  • Good communication and people skills are required.
  • SAP and PHA Pro knowledge/experience is a plus.
