Overview

A Process Engineer Co-op works in the Process Engineering Department (PED).  PED provides technical support to three on-site production areas, Utilities, the Safety, Health and Environmental Group plus several other manufacturing sites.  The assignment is diverse in that the Co-op will generally have responsibilities across several departments and units at the Calvert City site.

Description of Duties

  • Works with Sr. Process Engineers on planning, documenting, obtaining management approval, and installing capital projects.
  • Works with Production, Process Development, and QA/QC Analytical departments to develop, pilot and implement process changes or equipment upgrades. (includes:  process modeling, capacity debottlenecking, product quality improvements and cost justification)
  • Updates process or operating instructions. (300 different processes at Calvert City)
  • Helps train plant operators on process changes or equipment upgrades.
  • After becoming qualified, works in the plant during start-up campaigns for new or modified processes.
  • Graphically and statistically interprets process data to calculate process capability and assess performance.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of different types of processes (batch, continuous, semi-batch).
  • Understands and applies knowledge of different types of unit operations (polymerization, co-polymerization, hydrogenation, distillation, vinylation, heat transfer, compression, solvent exchange, drying, powder handling-conveying/packaging, fluid flow, ion exchange, and absorption).
  • Continually enhance everyone’s understanding of organic, physical, and/or analytical chemistry to solve problems and make process improvements.
